The Mini Skirt

The ultra short miniskirt was first revealed in 1960’s by Mary Quant. It was shocking to wear minis because back in the 20’s the flapper caused a stir for exposing knees. Ladies were expected to wear skirts at knee length and young girls were expected to follow the fashion trend. But everything changed when the daring Mary Quant designed shortened skirts. Although the designer Andre Courreges was also to be credited for the creation of the minis but it was Quant who successfully commercialized the new teenage fashion.

The miniskirt fashion also coincided with the birth of sexual revolution which later on exposed more than legs. It was also the start of birth control pills in the market. Sex was everywhere during this era and the miniskirt fashion was the best advertisement for the sexual revolution.

The miniskirt has remained as one of the major clothing style for women. In the year 1980’s; the miniskirt became a trend once again when Madonna slithered across the floor wearing thigh-high black lycra miniskirt. It was paired with lace tights and mesh shirts which exposed the navel. The 60’s miniskirt was mild compared to the 80’s body-hugging lycra miniskirts.

In the 90’s there was a new twist in the style of miniskirt; it was worn by Heather Locklear who played Amanda in the TV series Melrose Place. The skirt was barely below the hemline of the suit jackets. Ally McBeal wore almost the same length of miniskirt; this made professional women wonder if it was going too far.

Miniskirt was fearlessly worn by women since the 1960’s. This type of fashion allowed women to celebrate their sexuality and defy the conventional fashion style of the yesteryears. The hemlines may rise and fall faster than the stock market, but it is one way of showing that women are free to express their sexuality through the clothes they wear.
