Finding a Sublet: A Guide for Expats

It’s more fun in the Philippines.  That’s what the local Department of Tourism has been ramming down our throats as of late.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely a lot of truth to that slogan.  Filipinos are all about having a good time, and nearly every experience- whether food or travel- is always twice the fun here.

It comes as no surprise, then, that quite a number of tourists are taking an interest in this part of Southeast Asia.  If you happen to be an expat on the lookout for good Manila sublets, here are some pointers for you to keep in mind:

Plan ahead.  Well before your trip, start looking around for a place to stay.  Nothing is more stressful than doing things the last minute.  A good online place to search is www.ibilik.ph.  This is the largest and leading rental and sublet portal in the Philippines today.  It boasts of over 100,000 listings for rental places all over the country.

Choose your location.  Whether you’re on a business or leisure trip, do consider picking out a place proximate to where you’ll be conducting your affairs.  Manila is notorious for its snakelike traffic, so you’d be better off staying in a sublet which is a stone’s throw away from your place of business.

Set a price range.  Don’t make the mistake of looking for a place beyond your budget.  The last thing you’d want is to end up sleeping in the streets with old newspapers for blankets.

Contract matters.  After you have found your sublet, be sure you protect yourself by sorting out the necessary documents.  Be sure the terms of your lease are put down in writing, and duly signed by both parties.
