When you’re all ready for a spectacular evening out on the town, the last thing that you want is a wardrobe malfunction. While wardrobe malfunctions like Janet Jackson’s make the news and have everyone scurrying for the pause button, most wardrobe malfunctions are not nearly so entertaining.

For most women, the wardrobe malfunction occurs when the bra straps won’t stay up or when your hair falls out of place. Even more commonly, the night is going well, but you’re starting to sweat, and before you know it, your cosmetics are running. Or worst still, you get caught in the rain, and you wind up with runny mascara even though it was labeled waterproof.

Moisturize an Hour in Advance

Part of the reason that cosmetics slide is when they are not given a proper base. This becomes particularly true if you apply thick layers of makeup. Pancaking makeup, a term used by ballerinas and theatrical actresses, can lead to even more problems. In some cases, the makeup will become even more inclined to smear and distort its coloration. This is particularly problematic when you’ve decided to rent a dress. Renting a dress is a great way to ensure that you save your money for what you really want, but you don’t want to return a damaged gown.

So while you should can save a great deal of money by choosing to rent a designer dress from a rental service, you shouldn’t skimp when it comes to your foundation product: moisturizer. Invest in a moisture rich and nourishing cream. Cocoa butter and shea butter are both excellent choices. You may want to attempt an organic lotion if possible. Apply this an hour before you intend to put your makeup on. This way it has plenty of time to soak in.

Use a Sponge to Apply Foundation

After the hour has passed, you can move on to the foundation. The foundation is aptly named. When applied properly, it will ensure that your cosmetics last through the night without smearing or dripping. The key, however, is to apply it evenly and let it dry completely before adding other cosmetics. The best way to accomplish this is through using a sponge to apply the foundation. Make sure that the sponge is clean and then apply it to your face in smooth even strokes. To keep from increasing the chances of wrinkles, apply in an upward motion. Make sure that you apply it to your eyes as well. This will help to prevent creasing in your eye shadow and eye liner.

Seal Your Mascara

As you continue to apply your makeup, you will want to make sure that you take particular care of your mascara. Mascara has gained quite the reputation for running at the worst times. While manufacturers have managed to make fairly waterproof eyeliner, the mascara just tends to run. This is partially due to the nature of mascara and also because the composition of the mascara dissolves when it comes in contact with certain elements. If you have naturally dark eyelashes, you can avoid this entirely by using clear mascara. If you need dark mascara, then use a sealer afterwards to keep it from running.
