How to choose furniture for small living spaces

A close friend has just recently acquired a condo unit of her own, and to say that she is ecstatic is an understatement. Almost by force, she pulled me off my comfy living room beanbag to help her shop for modern furniture for her new living shack. What proves to be a challenge for her, is choosing pieces to match the small scale of her condo unit. With an interior designer in tow, we began our quest, with these tips in mind:

Choose modern furniture pieces which are lightweight and compact. Choose ones with legs or those made of glass, as these allow light to travel, thus giving the illusion of space.

It’s a common misconception to choose a bunch of small pieces to decorate a tiny living space. This creates the illusion of clutter. We should opt for one or two large pieces instead, as this makes the eye move slowly across the room, giving the feeling of spaciousness. We kept this in mind as we went shopping for modern sofa beds, and finally found one fairly large piece for her living room.

Select pieces in monochromatic colors. This likewise makes the room appear more spacious. We went on to look at the wide array of modern beds, and found one with a color which matches her side table. We also got slip covers in colors matching her bedroom walls.
