Easter is a season of hope, peace, and redemption for Catholic and Christian nations all over the world. The lighter side of Easter, however, brings images of colorful Easter eggs, spring flowers, adorable bunnies, and lots and lots of chocolate. Of course, there’s also the prospect of spring wardrobe shopping for shopaholics everywhere, going from thick and heavy to light and breezy. The colors of spring are oh so exciting and the Easter deals at coupons.com add to the fun of spring shopping. On this year’s shopping list are dresses for Easter service (I’m definitely checking out the Forever21 Buy One, Get One deals), sneakers or maybe a pair of strappy casual sandals, and a new table runner for our Easter egg display.

Easter Cleansing

Before you clean out your closet and think about shopping, take time to do a little spiritual cleansing. There’s no better time to reflect on what you have done wrong and how you can change yourself for the better than during Easter. This is a holiday that celebrates the foundation of the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It tells the story of how the Son of God was sacrificed so that man will be saved from sin. His rising again shows how powerful He is, yet it also shows how humble he is in His willingness to lead the people in living their lives away from sin. This comes after the 40-day period of Lent when the faithful fast, pray, and repent. For non-Catholics, it would not hurt to take this time to do some introspection and self-examination at this time too.

Traditions for Christians and Non-Christians

There are religious rites that are traditionally held during the period leading to Easter. There are church services that trace what is believed to have been the path of Jesus Christ before he was crucified and then buried. The week immediately preceding Easter is called the Holy Week, starting from Palm Sunday. Easter Triduum services and liturgical readings are held during the three days before Easter Sunday, referred to as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. The service held during the Easter Vigil from the night of Holy Saturday to the morning of Easter Sunday is considered to be the most important liturgy of the year. The service is done in total darkness and involves the blessing of the Easter fire. A large Paschal candle that is symbolic of the Risen Christ is also lighted followed by the Easter Proclamation.

The sunrise service is another tradition in most Christian nations. This is perhaps the most festive of all church services, aside from Christmas of course. Churchgoers come in their best Sunday clothes and often celebrate with an Easter feast afterwards. This part of the tradition is shared with people of other faith. The Easter brunch usually involve an Easter egg hunt and other fun activities for kids. Chocolates and sweets shaped like eggs, chicks, and bunnies are overflowing in these activities.

Whether you are a Christian or not, Easter is a season to celebrate. If not for religious significance, the hope and optimism brought by the festivities should be a good enough reason for people to observe this holiday.
